Static Cleared, For Real This Time

Okay. Last week I told you the new machine was live. That was true the way it’s true that a car missing a wheel is still, legally, a car. It rolled. It got you where you needed to go, assuming you didn’t hit a curve too fast, because the image galleries were held together with duct tape and prayer, and I was still finding bugs the way you find rats in a walls — one at a time, in the dark, screaming.

That machine is done. Not “live.” Done. Bolted down, every screw torqued, nothing rattling.

What actually got fixed

The image galleries work now. Not “work if you don’t click too fast,” not “work in Chrome but summon something ancient in Safari” — they just work. Every bug I know about is dead, including the one from launch week where the Signal Drift archive sorted itself backwards and made you spelunk to the bottom of the internet just to find page one. Fixed. The story reads forward now, like it was written by a person instead of assembled by a haunted spreadsheet.

I released this thing early on purpose, because the only way to actually stress-test a machine is to hand it to a crowd and watch what breaks. You were the crash test dummies. Nobody died. The site’s better for it, and so is my blood pressure, marginally.

One more thing

This isn’t a WordPress theme wearing a costume. There’s no page builder underneath groaning every time someone loads a page, no analytics script phoning home behind your back, no plugin update that’s one bad Tuesday away from taking the whole thing down. Every piece of this is mine, hand-built, which means when something breaks, I fix it — I don’t open a ticket and wait for a stranger in another time zone to get to it. That’s why this took as long as it did. That’s why it’s actually done now instead of just declared done. I built this by hand and I am goddamn proud of it.

Now go break it on purpose

I didn’t rebuild this whole machine so you could bookmark the homepage and vanish. Get in there. Click on stuff. Dig into the archive, find a Signal Drift chapter you forgot existed, poke at a corner you didn’t know had anything in it. It’s fast now, it’s clean now, and it’s built to be explored, not just survived. Kick the tires. Hard.

The bad news, said quickly

There was no Signal Drift chapter yesterday. I told you Book 2 would start September 11th, and then my day job — the one that pays for the servers this whole operation lives on — decided that was the day it needed me most. So: one more week. Book 2 starts next week instead. That’s the whole delay, no further groveling required.

This is another official release. Not a soft launch, not a “probably fine,” not a “should be stable now.” The transmitter’s clean, the signal’s clear, and the machine is finally, actually, done.

Go explore. It won’t bite. Mostly.
