Gene Hackman

It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of legendary actor Gene Hackman, who, along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog, was found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26, 2025. Hackman was 95 years old. Authorities have stated there are no signs of foul play, and investigations into the cause of death are ongoing. 

Born Eugene Allen Hackman on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California, Hackman’s early life was marked by challenges, including a turbulent childhood and service in the U.S. Marine Corps. These experiences fueled his passion for acting, leading him to study at the Pasadena Playhouse. His breakthrough role came as Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), earning him an Academy Award nomination. 

Hackman’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he portrayed a wide array of complex characters. He won two Academy Awards: Best Actor for his role as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor as Sheriff “Little Bill” Daggett in Unforgiven (1992). His versatility shone in films such as Hoosiers (1986), where he played a high school basketball coach; Mississippi Burning (1988), portraying an FBI agent investigating civil rights violations; and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), as the eccentric patriarch of a dysfunctional family. 

Beyond his cinematic achievements, Hackman was an accomplished author, co-writing several historical fiction novels. He retired from acting in 2004, with his final film being Welcome to Mooseport. In retirement, he enjoyed painting and continued his writing endeavors. 

Hackman’s personal life included a 30-year marriage to Faye Maltese, with whom he had three children: Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie. In 1991, he married Betsy Arakawa, a classical pianist, and they resided together in Santa Fe. 

Gene Hackman’s profound impact on cinema and storytelling has left an indelible mark on the arts. His ability to embody diverse roles with authenticity and depth endeared him to audiences worldwide. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a legacy that will continue to inspire and influence future generations.
