Signal Drift: Chapter 26

The six minutes didn’t tick away; they evaporated.

Inside the concrete gullet of the utility culvert, the digital clock on Jamie’s custom Mylar deck didn’t show numbers anymore—just a shrinking red bar that bled down to nothing. The wet burlap draped over the BMW GS’s horizontal cylinder heads was steaming, the rising vapor smelling of scorched swamp grass and hot German oil.

Then the air pressure changed. A sharp, high-frequency tone pierced the left side of Cronauer’s helmet speakers, chewing through the low-end frequency where Stuck Mojo had been playing only moments before.

The checksum had run. The machine was awake.

“Visual loop breached,” Jamie’s voice crackled through the bone-conduction mic, stripped of all its eccentric rave-wizard bravado. “The main frame just flag-dropped an unauthorized data insertion. Catwalk automated turrets are pivoting, Cronauer. You need to become loud right now.”

Cronauer didn’t hesitate. He yanked the wet burlap off the boxer twin, threw his leg over the saddle, and slammed the starter button. The engine didn’t just fire; in the enclosed concrete tunnel, the raw blast of the exhaust hit the walls like an explosive charge. He dumped the hydraulic clutch in first gear.

The oversized Continental knobby tires clawed at the slick, moss-covered concrete floor, throwing a violent rooster tail of river silt behind him as the 600-pound dual-sport lunged out of the tunnel mouth and onto the lower maintenance deck of the dam.

The green world of his PVS-14 night vision goggles exploded into a blinding kaleidoscope of white and crimson as the perimeter floodlights tripped on. The automated defense system wasn’t searching; it was area-denying.

To his left, the first three-barrel Aegis global turret spun on its mount, its internal laser designator painting a solid red line across the GS’s aluminum windscreen. Cronauer didn’t try to dodge the arc. He leaned the bike hard into the concrete utility staircase leading up to the main bridge deck, hammering the throttle.

The heavy enduro suspension slammed against the concrete risers, the front tire jumping two steps at a time as the boxer twin roared at seven thousand RPM. He cleared the first twelve steps just as the turret behind him opened up. The supersonic snap of 7.62 rounds chewed into the concrete stairs he’d occupied a fraction of a second before, showering the back of his tactical pack with jagged stone shrapnel.

At the top of the landing, the main deck checkpoint was a visual bottleneck. Two Aegis contractors in full gray-and-black armor were already pivoting behind a ballistic shield, their carbines leveled at the staircase mouth.

There was no time to pull the AR-15 from its scabbard. Cronauer stood flat on the pegs, shifted his weight to the rear, and used the sheer physical mass of the armored German bike as a kinetic battering ram. He hit the ballistic shield at forty miles per hour.

The impact was a sickening crunch of high-impact polycarbonate and reinforced steel guardrails. One contractor was thrown clean over the side of the catwalk, disappearing into the churning white foam of the spillway below. The second was crushed beneath the heavy aluminum Touratech pannier as the bike slid sideways across the wet decking.

Cronauer dug his right boot into the metal grading, wrestling the front wheel back into line as the handlebars whipped violently from lock to lock. The western edge of the dam was fifty yards ahead, swallowed by a massive, impenetrable wall of river fog rolling off the Mississippi.

He pinned the gas. The GS lunged through the shattered remains of the security gate, leaping off the concrete apron and plunging headlong into the thick, gray blindness of the western shore. The automated tracking lasers struck the fog behind him, scattering into harmless pink clouds as the Driftless night swallowed the signal of his escape.
