Birthdays, death days, and deep cuts — this episode is one of those strange rides that only happens when the universe lines up in a weird way and throws a bunch of anniversaries at you all at once. We didn’t plan it this way, but by the time the show came together, it felt like the most fitting kind of chaos.
Let’s start with Sly Stone, who we just lost on June 6. I hadn’t seen the news until the day I was prepping the show. Sly & the Family Stone were a foundational force in funk, soul, and rock, and their music never lost its punch. Their Greatest Hits collection still holds up as one of the most airtight albums of the era — not a single skip track. So we opened the show with that, front to back, in his honor.
Then we jump to something you probably weren’t expecting: Pat Boone. Yep, that Pat Boone. He just turned 91 years old on June 1 — and we’re marking the occasion by spinning the entirety of In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy. If you’ve never heard this record, you’re probably thinking I’ve lost my mind. I get it. That was my reaction too. But then you listen… and it actually works. Big-band swing arrangements of metal and hard rock classics with Boone crooning like he’s fronting the Rat Pack at a biker bar. It’s weird, it’s funny, and it’s way better than it has any right to be.
From there, we slide into the Rolling Stones — specifically Some Girls — in honor of Ronnie Wood’s birthday, also on June 1. It’s the record where Ronnie really came into his own in the band, and it’s packed with raw, sleazy, punk-edged swagger. “Miss You” and “Beast of Burden” might get the airplay, but the whole album rips.
And finally, we close with Prince, who would’ve turned 67 on June 7. We faded out the show with “Purple Rain,” because of course we did. It’s Prince. It’s timeless. It doesn’t need a reason — but a birthday is as good a one as any.
This whole episode is built around the kind of energy you can’t predict — birthdays and obituaries overlapping, musical legacies hitting you from every angle. It’s weird. It’s chaotic. It’s Rolling with Scissors.
