First off, thank you to everyone who pledged during last week’s drive. WORT runs on listener support, and Rolling with Scissors wouldn’t exist without it. You keep this kind of radio alive, and I’m grateful.
This week’s show comes from my still half-built studio in Eau Claire. Right now, it’s more wires and placeholders than polished setup, but it works. Every week I’m adding another piece, getting closer to having the full production space back together. It’s been a challenge to rebuild while also cranking out a fresh show every week, but the best way forward is to just keep doing it — even if it has to come in chunks.
And speaking of chunks, we’re taking on just a slice of Mike Patton’s massive career this week. There’s no way to cover everything at once — the man has too many projects, too many twists. So for Episode 1320, we’re focusing on Faith No More and Peeping Tom.
Faith No More: Angel Dust and Beyond
When people talk about Patton, they usually start here — and for good reason. With Patton on vocals, Faith No More morphed into something wild, unpredictable, and unforgettable. Angel Dust in particular is one of my all-time favorites: a record that veers from crushing riffs to lounge detours, from chaos to beauty, often in the same song. It’s Patton at his most unfiltered, and the band firing on all cylinders.
Peeping Tom: Pop Through Patton’s Lens
On the other end of the spectrum is Peeping Tom, Patton’s so-called “pop” project. But of course, “pop” in his hands doesn’t mean bubblegum. It means collaborations with everyone from Norah Jones to Massive Attack, stitching together hip hop, trip hop, rock, and electronics into something that’s both accessible and deeply strange. It’s Patton flexing his ability to bend genres without losing his own stamp.
What’s Next
There’s so much more to cover — Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, film scores, collaborations — but that’s for another time. This week is about taking it in manageable chunks, both for the sake of the show and my own sanity while I get this new studio online. Patton’s catalog isn’t going anywhere, and we’ll be back to dive deeper soon.
