Signal Drift: Chapter 1

The hiss of the transmitter filled the small, cluttered room, a soft white noise that never quite went silent. Cronauer sat hunched over the control board, fingers absently tapping dials he could adjust in his sleep. The battered mixing console still bore the cigarette burns and duct-taped scars of its last life, salvaged from a public access station before the government shut it down in the name of “content regulation.” Now it hummed under his hands, alive again, stitched into the lifeline of a pirate signal running through the cracked veins of the city.

He glanced at the spectrum monitor. No spikes. No intercept attempts. For now.

A stack of CDs teetered precariously next to the old laptop, each one sharpied with names — Mission of Burma, The Sound, Public Enemy, Skinny Puppy, Porcupine Tree. Songs too real, too messy, too human for what passed as culture now.

Cronauer leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes for a moment, breathing in the familiar cocktail of hot plastic, ozone, and whatever was still decaying under the floorboards.

There was comfort in it.

The comfort of an outlaw routine.

Back when he first started in tech — before everything had a dashboard, before everything was optimized to death — there had been wonder in the wires. You threw a thought into the void and waited to see if anyone caught it. No metrics. No clickthroughs. Just a pulse, drifting through the dark.

Now, the networks bled you dry the second you plugged in.

Every page scraped, every word scored.

Every broadcast licensed, rated, scrubbed.

Cronauer hadn’t asked for permission in a long time.

It had been a month since the blackout, maybe more. Hard to tell anymore without clocks, calendars, or headlines.

He was too old for permission.

Too stubborn for compliance.

He reached out, flipped the switch to begin the night’s broadcast, and watched the levels dance.

The signal rolled out in a thin, defiant wave — somewhere between legal and forgotten.

He keyed the mic, voice low and steady.

“Good morning, sleepers. This is Station Zero calling through the static. If you can hear me, you’re not alone.”

The needle climbed.

The transmitter thrummed.

Cronauer smiled — a small, private rebellion — and dropped the first track into the dead air.

Not all ghosts haunted the past.

Some of them played vinyl under stolen stars.

And tonight, Signal Drift would carry them all a little further than yesterday.
