Skate Parks, Curbs, Eau Claire Stories – Episode 1312

Yeah, I know — it’s been four weeks since anything went up on the website. You probably noticed. I wasn’t gone for good, just on vacation. While I was out, I pulled together a little retrospective: four reworked shows from late 2018. Some of you may not have heard that material the first time around, so it was a chance to dig back into the archives while I recharged.

Eau Claire Adventures

Part of the break took me up to Eau Claire to spend time with someone very important to me. That city has a way of leaving a mark on me — sometimes literally. Ten years ago, I was out drinking there and hit a bump that sent me flying out of my chair, wrecking my ankle. This time, history rhymed.

I was out exploring while they were at an appointment — headphones on, music blasting, just rolling around town. On my way to pick up dinner at the grocery store, I spotted a freshly paved parking lot. If you’re in a wheelchair, that’s like Daytona — smooth, fast, perfect for bombing across at top speed. Problem was, I didn’t know this lot. Out of nowhere, a curb popped up. Instead of committing and gunning it, I panicked, threw it in reverse too late, and WHAM — chair flips, I’m on the ground, sprawled out in a town where I know one person, and they’re not with me.

Some guy ran over to help, but he wasn’t about to deadlift me and a 400-pound chair. Luckily, a lawnmower guy saw the whole thing and between the two of them they got me upright. Eau Claire hospitality, right there. I went back sore and thought I’d just bruised myself, but nope — turns out I’d ripped off a toenail (almost two), scraped up my knee, and basically gave myself another Eau Claire scar.

Parks, Skate Parks, and River Views

Where I was staying, I was right across from a new park — the kind with a full skate park built into it. And yes, I may have rolled my chair into the skate bowl. Probably not the smartest idea, but I survived, and honestly it was pretty damn cool.

Not far away is Phoenix Park, a riverside hub with a farmers market, an outdoor amphitheater, and music all summer. Eau Claire is also called the City of Bridges — seventeen of them stretch across the rivers, offering some beautiful views. Downtown itself felt a lot like Madison in the ’90s: smaller, looser, but buzzing with music and energy.

Beer, Coffee, and Music

The city has no shortage of hangouts. There’s The Brewing Projekt, which is ambitious in both beer and vibe. The Acoustic Café is a must-stop for coffee and live music. And then there’s The Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen, a riverside self-pour taproom with more than seventy taps. Add in Phoenix Park’s farmers market and amphitheater, and you’ve got a downtown that feels like it’s humming with possibility.

Seattle Nostalgia in the Mix

If you grew up in the 90s — or just lived through them with your ears open — Seattle wasn’t just a city, it was a soundtrack. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog… it wasn’t just music, it was a movement. A whole cultural shift that defined an era.

This week’s playlist leans into that vibe hard, bringing back the rawness and edge of the Seattle sound. It’s music that still feels alive thirty years later, even as we look back on it with a mix of nostalgia and reverence.

So, between curb-crashing adventures in Eau Claire and getting back into the studio, I wanted to honor that part of my own musical DNA. Because if Eau Claire left me with bruises and stories, Seattle left me with a soundtrack that never really stopped playing.
