Discovering Drumeo: Better Late Than Never

OK, so I’m probably pretty late to the party — actually, I know I’m late — but a few months ago, a good friend of mine told me about the YouTube channel Drumeo. If you’re not familiar, it’s this incredible channel where some of the best drummers in the world sit down, break down songs, jam, and just generally remind you why humans still matter in a world increasingly filled with AI and auto-tune.

The episode that got me hooked? Mike Portnoy — yes, that Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater — trying to decode the monster that is Danny Carey from Tool.

If you’ve ever listened to Tool and thought, “How the hell is he even doing that?”, watching Portnoy try to break it down is oddly comforting.

Even one of the best progressive metal drummers of all time had to sit there and go, “OK… wait… what?”

It’s an incredible episode, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you need to. (The whole Drumeo channel is a goldmine if you’re a music head.)

This morning, I was mindlessly scrolling through TikTok — like you do — and stumbled across another Drumeo clip that stopped me cold.

John Stamos. Yeah, that John Stamos. Uncle Jesse. Full House.

I knew he was a musician, but I didn’t know he was a legit drummer.

And not just sort of a drummer — the guy is an absolute beast.

In the clip, Stamos is handed “Last Resort” by Papa Roach — and he absolutely cracks it.

I mean, it’s damn close to the record.

I’ve seen Papa Roach live, and let me tell you — John Stamos could absolutely fill in on drums for them, at least on that song.

No hesitation.

No jokes.

The guy’s a monster.

It’s one of those moments where you realize how much raw musical ability is floating around in people you thought you knew.

It also reminds you why real, human musicianship still matters.

Because you can’t fake what guys like Portnoy, Carey, or even Stamos do when they sit down behind a kit.

It’s feel.

It’s instinct.

It’s decades of sweat and practice coming out in a few bars of music.

So yeah, I’m late to Drumeo.

But I’m glad I finally found it.

And if you haven’t fallen down that rabbit hole yet, consider this your formal invitation.
