Nick Cave Death of the Album

I get that times change and technology evolves, but I’m finding it hard to wrap my head around how we’ve shifted from buying entire albums to focusing solely on singles. Like many people, I discover new music through social media and think, “This is cool, I’ll check out their album.” But nowadays, I often only find the single I liked and a bunch of other singles, without the full album.

I get that standalone tracks have their place, but I really miss when albums were the main attraction. Just today, it took me a couple of hours and a friend’s help to figure out how to download the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, Wild God. Platforms like Amazon seem more geared towards streaming rather than making it easy to purchase digital albums outright.

Wild God is amazing, and we’ll be diving deep into Nick Cave’s work in an upcoming episode.

For those who might not know, artists used to release collections of songs in albums that often told a story or set a mood. When you only get standalone singles, you miss out on the full experience. Imagine if Pink Floyd had just released singles and never created The Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall.
