In my world, when things go south and end up on the floor, I reach for my reliable companion: The Big Stick. Now, don’t get excited. I’m talking about my reacher. It’s long, it’s semi-rigid, and it has a grip that would make a rock climber jealous. But as I was hovering over a particularly messy pile of refuse, trying to find just the right angle to get a solid purchase on the situation, I realized something profound.

I looked at the mess, looked at my tool, and said it out loud to the empty room: “There are just some things you can’t do, even with a big stick.”

The Grip of Reality

Look, we all like to think that having the right equipment makes you a master of your domain. You’ve got the reach, you’ve got the leverage, and you think you can handle anything that comes your way. But sometimes, life throws something at you that’s too slippery, too heavy, or just positioned in a way that no amount of poking and prodding is going to fix.

It doesn’t matter how much “extension” you’ve got; if the friction isn’t there, you’re just a guy in a chair waving a piece of aluminum around like a frustrated conductor.

There’s a metaphor in there somewhere about the “system” or the bureaucracy we were talking about earlier, but mostly, it was just about the trash. It was about the specialized skill required to pinch a piece of soggy cardboard at the exact center of gravity so it doesn’t flop over and disappoint you right as you’re about to reach the finish line.

It’s a game of inches. It’s about knowing your limitations. And it’s about accepting that sometimes, even with the biggest stick in the valley, you’re still going to end up with a mess on your hands.
