TikTok Smacked Me in the Face

I was scrolling through TikTok, as one does nowadays, and out of nowhere, a track slapped me in the face. Not literally (that would be impressive), but it hit me in a way that made me stop, rewind, and say, “What the hell is this, and why does it feel like the exact soundtrack to everything right now?”

The song? “BATTLEFIELD” by SkyDxddy.

Now, I know—it came out in 2022, but somehow, it feels more relevant now than ever.

Who the Hell is SkyDxddy?

SkyDxddy (real name Skylar DeMarino) is an artist who doesn’t just make music—she rips open wounds and forces you to confront them. She calls her style “Traumacore,” which is exactly what it sounds like: music that digs into trauma, survival, mental health, and the kind of real-life battles that most artists don’t touch unless it’s for some radio-friendly inspirational nonsense.

She’s got 1.4 million followers on TikTok, where her music has found a massive audience of people who actually get it. Songs like “Triggered” and “MONSTERS INK” have racked up millions of streams because they don’t sugarcoat anything. They’re raw, honest, and straight-up brutal in the best way possible.

Why “BATTLEFIELD” Feels Like Right Now

“BATTLEFIELD” isn’t just a song—it’s an anthem for survival. It captures that feeling of being at war with yourself, with the world, with the constant pressure of just existing. And if that doesn’t sum up right now, I don’t know what does.

The mix of alternative rock and hip-hop elements gives it a unique punch. It’s one of those songs that, if you hear it at the right moment, hits different.

And the crazy part? I probably wouldn’t have found it if not for TikTok.

The Annoying Reality of Buying Music in 2024

Hearing it on TikTok made me immediately have to go buy it. Yes, buy it. Because while I understand that we live in a streaming world, that doesn’t mean I have to live in it.

But here’s the problem—it’s getting harder and harder to actually purchase music.

Between platform exclusives, DRM, and the industry shoving everyone into a “rent your music forever” model, just owning a song is becoming a hassle. I get that streaming is convenient, but I also remember a time when if you liked something, you bought it, and it was yours. No worrying about whether some licensing agreement would pull it off a service overnight. No disappearing albums. No endless subscriptions.

I’m still gonna buy my music when I can, but damn, they don’t make it easy anymore.

Give Credit Where It’s Due

So, before anyone gets trigger-happy with a takedown request: All credit goes to SkyDxddy. She’s the artist, the voice, and the one bringing real, gut-punch music to the table. I’m just the guy who got smacked in the face by it via an algorithm.

If you haven’t heard “BATTLEFIELD”, here’s your chance:
